Choosing a Vaccine Fridge
Choose the right vaccine fridge by comparing location, capacity, airflow, alarms, monitoring, warranty, QCPP approval and cold chain requirements before buying a medical fridge for your facility.
This guide covers the main practical decisions before selecting a vaccine refrigerator.
Appropriate location
The placement of a vaccine refrigerator is critical. A medical fridge needs enough space around it for airflow so it can operate efficiently and maintain stable temperatures.
Most vaccine fridges require clearance around the cabinet, often around 30 mm on each side, although some models are designed for tighter spaces or under-bench installation with minimal clearance. Always check the manufacturer’s ventilation requirements before installing a vaccine fridge.
Where possible, place the vaccine fridge in an insulated room and avoid positioning it against an outside wall that may be affected by hot or cold weather. The available space will also influence whether you need a benchtop, under-counter, upright or large-capacity vaccine fridge.
Appropriate capacity
A vaccine fridge or pharmacy refrigerator must have enough capacity to store vaccines safely during normal use and peak demand periods, such as influenza vaccination programs.
Avoid overpacking the fridge. Overcrowding can restrict cold air circulation and increase the risk of uneven temperatures. In many cases, it is safer to choose a slightly larger vaccine fridge rather than one that only just meets your current storage needs.
Vaccine and pharmacy fridges generally fall into three broad capacity ranges:
- Benchtop and under-counter vaccine fridges: compact models for smaller clinics, treatment rooms and pharmacies.
- Upright vaccine fridges: larger cabinets for higher stock volumes and easier stock organisation.
- Custom medical and pharmacy fridges: larger purpose-built cabinets for facilities with substantial storage requirements.
Glass door vs solid door
Glass door and solid door vaccine fridges each have advantages. Glass door models make it easier to check stock without opening the door, while solid door models may provide better insulation in some environments.

Warranty and support
Warranty should be considered when comparing vaccine fridge prices. A cheaper model may not be the better option if it has a shorter warranty, fewer support options or less suitable features for your facility.
ENLAKE supplies vaccine fridges from a wide range of manufacturers, including brands such as Nuline and ICS Pacific. Warranty terms vary between brands and models, so check the warranty before purchasing.
External alarm connection
If you plan to connect your vaccine fridge to a building alarm or monitoring system, check whether the fridge has an external alarm connection.
Terms commonly used for this feature include voltage-free contacts, dry contacts, normally open connection and normally closed connection. Some vaccine fridges include this capability as standard, while others require it to be selected as an option.
Data loggers and temperature records
Consider purchasing a data logger when you buy a vaccine fridge. Data loggers record temperatures at set intervals and allow temperature history to be downloaded and reviewed.
Temperature records are useful for audits, cold chain management and identifying how the fridge performs over time. They can also help assess whether a temperature excursion lasted long enough to require further action.
Alarm notification
Some vaccine fridges and monitoring systems can send alerts by SMS or email if the cabinet temperature moves outside the required range. This is useful for facilities that need after-hours notification of temperature excursions or power failures.
ENLAKE also supplies temperature monitoring solutions that can be used with vaccine fridges, medical fridges and laboratory refrigerators.
QCPP approval
For pharmacy vaccine storage, check whether the vaccine fridge meets relevant Quality Care Pharmacy Program requirements. Some fridges sold as medical or pharmacy fridges may not be suitable for vaccine storage or QCPP-related cold chain requirements.
Before purchasing, confirm that the fridge is purpose-built for vaccine storage and suitable for maintaining the required 2°C to 8°C temperature range.
